Terrace Gardens Inc. Launches Public Awareness Campaign Addressing the Urban Heat Island Effect on NYC

[New York, NY] In hopes of tackling the Urban Heat Island (UHI) crisis in NYC, the nonprofit organization Terrace Gardens has initiated the public awareness campaign “Chill the Block.”  The campaign intends to ignite New Yorkers’ passion to combat the UHI effect through gardening, with an emphasis on rooftop gardens in underserved communities.

NYC’s  dense infrastructure of tall buildings, concrete, and asphalt absorbs heat, making  the city susceptible to intense temperatures. With summer approaching, temperatures are bound to rise, further increasing the risk of the UHI effect.

“We want to ignite New Yorkers’ passion to fight against the UHI effect through gardening and to educate the masses on the prevalence of this issue regarding UHIs.” – Co-founder of Terrace Gardens

Terraces Gardens is strongly encouraging building tenants, landlords, policy makers, and anyone who is interested in making a change to join us and be the seed that grows into the change you want to see.

About Terrace Gardens:  As a friend group (now founders) was casually exploring NYC, one of them suffered from a heatstroke. Startled by this experience, they began to investigate the possible causes and came across the UHI effect. Feeling the need for change, the group came together and started Terrace Gardens, a nonprofit organization. Terrace Gardens advocates for more greenery in the city, encouraging building residents and anyone interested,  to join the fight against the UHI effect and create their own gardens, especially rooftop gardens. Additionally, Terrace Gardens offers resources and education to help individuals begin their gardening journey and expand awareness.
